No. 4 D Company, c. 1940. Te Papa PA.000038, colourised

D Company of the 28th (Māori) Battalion drew its men from a wide sweep of the country, from the King Country and Taranaki down the Whanganui River to Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, the South Island and the Pacific. This site gathers what can be found about each of them, one man at a time, from the Online Cenotaph, the battalion’s official history, old newspapers, service files and the memories of their whānau.

It is a work in progress. New men are added as their stories are pieced together, and every page can be corrected or added to. If you are whānau and can share a story, a correction or a photograph, please get in touch.

About the portraits

Each man’s portrait is set against the colour of his home region. Where a photograph of him survives, the portrait is restored and colourised from it. Where no photograph is known, the portrait is imagined, sometimes from a family likeness, and the caption on his page says which. If you have a real photograph of any of these men, it would be treasured here.
